An example of comments received by Sky Racing Producer, Celeste Whitmore, following the Australian flighting last week of the 2011/2012 Summerhill Sires Film :

To: Angus Roland

Subject: Summerhill Stud

Gus,

Morning to you, hope the weekend was an enjoyable one. Just a quick note, I saw the piece on Summerhill Stud in South Africa on Sunday morning’s edition of Bred To Win. It has to be arguably the best stud DVD I have ever seen. Phenomenally well done. I was so taken by it I wanted to see if Sky may have a copy of it. I would love to see it again and possibly learn a few things.

Kind regards,

Eden

PETER MILLER : THIS MAN CASTS A BIG SHADOW

SUMMERHILL SIRES FILM 2011/2012

“Live here… 7AM Friday”

The longest-serving Finance Minister in modern times was Peter Miller, whose portfolio in that capacity straddled two eras in South African history, the old and the new. He was as competent a minister as any we’ve known, and under his stewardship, racing in KwaZulu-Natal positively thrived. We have much to thank him for, and especially for the fact that he continues to serve in an advisory capacity in the province, where his experience as a politician stands him in fine stead, given the factional turmoil of recent times.

It’s a compliment then, to the Summerhill Sires Film, that the ex-Minister took the trouble to sms when he noticed our latest epic on Supersport 1 last Saturday. “I have just seen a piece on the new School Of Management Excellence on Supersport 1. It is a great tribute to what you fellows have done to foster the interests of the underprivileged, and an ongoing compliment to the standards you have set at Summerhill. Well done.” Rare praise from a rare man.

Remember, this edition of the Sires DVD is said to be an improvement on last year’s, which itself earned the plaudits at the Durban International Film Festival when it came on screen this time a year ago. If you haven’t seen it, it’ll be live on this blog 7AM Friday; make yourself a cup of tea and give yourself ten minutes. The technical quality of this movie has to be seen to be appreciated; it surpasses anything we’ve known in the horse business anywhere. Forgive the narrator, but he’s what the farm had to offer!

SUMMERHILL STALLION DAY A "FULL HOUSE" SUCCESS

WHEN IT COMES TO GENEROSITY,

YOU CAN’T BEAT RACING.

Sunday marked one of the most successful Summerhill Stallion Days in history. Remembering that on the first such day 31 years ago, only 15 souls, including the farm staff, gathered on the lawn under the old oak tree outside the farm office, it was good to see the “house full” signs go up last Tuesday. Eighteen different nations assembled under perfect winter skies and 24°C. While the entertainment was obviously about stallions, the 560 guests were treated again to a sublime show from the Summerhill national champion dance troupe.

When you get your copy of the 2010 Summerhill Sires brochure (the best yet, and hot off the press yesterday), it will be accompanied by the latest DVD, produced by Durban-based iKind Media, who’s team includes students and graduates from the Durban University of Technology (DUT). For our money, Michael and Matthew Nefdt have given us the best “horse” movie we’ve known. See it on the Summerhill blog, and tell us if you agree (or view it this evening on Tellytrack (Channel 232) between 19h00 and 20h00.

As we’ve come to expect, racing fans were overtly generous when it came to the sale of stallion services in support of the Al Maktoum School of Management Excellence, and it’s a singular tribute to the Summerhill stallions that every one of them made more than his current listed price in the auction.

Whether it was the stallions themselves, or the combination of their appeal and an unparalleled performance from auctioneer Graeme Hawkins, is impossible to say, but here are the details :

To those that gave and to those that bid, you’ll never know the value you’ve added to the lives of people who’d never have known, without your generosity.
