Mick Goss

Summerhill Stud CEOLast night’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale was a tribute to the far sightedness, the enterprise and guts of our countrymen who made up the bulk of the buying bench at an historic sale. It was historic for a number of reasons, the principal of which was the record turnover and the record average, posted in the most austere economic circumstances in our lifetime. In the end, it had to be a compliment to the quality of the horses on offer, but that should not detract from the commitment buyers made in this day and age, and it just shows how deep the lure of a racehorse can be. Quite obviously, racing fans have become disillusioned with the vagaries of the stock market, the bad news we see across the tabloids and on our TV sets everyday, and they’ve decided to hell with it all, let’s get ourselves a racehorse.

They know that there’ll still be Julys, Mets, Summer Cups and Ready To Run Cups in the years ahead, and they obviously love the idea of the possibility of getting a run for the R2million pot on offer on the first Saturday in November.

It wasn’t all plain sailing though, with the disparity between the top lots and the bottom something of a chasm, and the sale divided into specific segments, soft for the first 50 lots or so, and again for the last 20, but surprisingly strong for most of the middle part.

In the end, the sale turned R31,030,000 (last year R23,685,000, and R27,530,000 in 2009). The average this year was R189,207, against respective averages for 2010 and 2009 of R154,804 and R177,613. The increase in average was 22% on last year’s, and the aggregate was 31% up. Summerhill’s average for the sale was R205,000, which we would have to consider satisfactory in the circumstances. There are always hard luck stories in a sale wherever and whenever it takes place, and this one was no different, but given the clearance rate and the other outcomes, it was something of a miracle.

To the number one country in the world, from the best consignors of Ready To Run thoroughbreds in the world, thank you.

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, Germiston

South Africa

6 November 2011

The 2011 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale concluded Sunday at record levels. The sale aggregate topped R31,030,000, up 31% on 2010 figures. The average of R189,207 was up 22% on the previous year.

The sale was largely dominated by well bred, imported 2-year-olds and was topped by lot 35, a superb looking son of Royal Academy, who was knocked down for R1.5 million to Form Bloodstock. The unnamed colt is out of the Medicean mare, Dubai’s Fairy, and was consigned by Summerhill Sales. The other lot to make R1million was lot 180 Duke Of Medina, a son of Rock Of Gibraltar, who was also purchased by Form Bloodstock.

The top priced filly on the sale was lot 71 Hope Forever, a daughter of El Prado knocked down for R900,000. Consigned by Summerhill Sales, the grey filly was purchased by Anfield Sports.

Imported sires truly dominated the sale with top prices being paid for the progeny of Royal Academy, Rock Of Gibraltar, El Prado, Street Sense, Dylan Thomas, Danehill Dancer, Any Given Sunday, Tale Of The Cat and Forestry.

Top sires by aggregate were Rock Of Gibraltar, Mullins Bay, Kahal, El Prado and Stronghold.

Summerhill Stud’s Mick Goss was pleased with the overall result of the sale, saying, “It was a record turnover for the sale, which in these tough times is truly remarkable. This sale is also a tribute to the spirit of South Africans, who have shown their spirit and resilience at the sale. People remained until the last lot sold, and there was a million rand available with just five lots to sell.”

The TBA’s CEO Jan Naude was also satisfied by the one day sale, commenting, “The pin hooked imports really stole the show, but there was still good money for the good locally bred individual.”

ACTION-PACKED CHARITY MILE RACE DAY

Pierre Jourdan

(Photo : Summerhill Stud)

PEERMONT CHARITY MILE RACE DAY

Turffontein, South Africa

5 November 2011

What a fantastic month of racing November promises to be! The action kicks off at Turffontein Saturda with the R2,000,000 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m and R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile over 1600mThe Citizen International Jockeys’ Challenge between South Africa and the World team follows a week later and the R2,000,000 Sansui Summer Cup brings the month to a magnificent climax on Saturday 26 November.

The Charity Mile race day has grown into a festival of racing since its inception in 2003 and now boasts twelve races including five features and racing fans will be treated to more than six hours of high-class action. The most intriguing race on the day is the highly prized Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, an event that offers a mega payday to graduates of the previous year’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, with total prize money of R2,000,000 paying down to 10th spot.

South African Champion trainer Mike de Kock plays a strong hand for Cup glory with a formidable stable including Australian imports Dansili Express (AUS) and Frontino Gold (AUS) as well as the unbeaten Red Barrel. Sean Tarry’s classy Australian import, Verrochio (AUS), who won convincingly on his second start, looks well above average.

There are a number of fillies in the Cup and the pick is likely to be Roy Magner’s runner, Kinematic Countess. She has already contested nine races, so has more racecourse experience than many of her rivals. The Sean Tarry-trained Way West filly, Extra Zero, stands out. She certainly has the ability to add a few extra zero’s to Tarry’s bank balance and with 6 runs under her belt has the experience to boot. Interestingly, she has a sister in the folowing day’s sale, lot 65 Negev.

Look out too for the Cape raider, Dean Kannemeyer-trained, Admiral John Peter. Although a tough task, Dean’s father, Peter Kannemeyer, successfully raided Gauteng with Over The Air many years ago.

If victory were to fall to any of the Australia-bred runners, Sunday’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale at the TBA Sales Complex will see an even huger demand for the imported prospects on offer.

Betting World has Red Barrel at 2/1, Verrochio at 4/1, Dansili Express at 9/2, Extra Zero at 7/1 and Frontino Gold at 12/1.

Mike de Kock is also going all out to win the Charity Mile and has five of the 16 runners carded including Rudra, Kavanagh, Welwitschia (GB), Empenoso Henn (ARG) and 2010 Summer Cup winner, Flirtation. Champion jockey Anton Marcus has the ride on British-bred filly Welwitschia, while stable jockey Anthony Delpech is sticking with Kavanagh, who he rode for the first time in a 1400m sprint recently.

Kavanagh seems to do best when saved for a late effort and Delpech gave the flashy colt a perfect ride that saw him beat Two Tone by an easy length. There’s a view that Kavanagh doesn’t really stay 1600m, but he’s capable of running a huge race if Delpech makes his move late. Nevertheless, the talk is of Welwitschia. Six months younger than South African-bred four-year-olds, this British-bred filly is now catching up fast and beat Dancewiththedevil in good style in a 1450m race on the Turffontein inside track recently. She will find Dancewiththedevil a much tougher opponent on this standside track and it’s worth noting that Dancewiththedevil crushed Welwitschia by four lengths over this 1600m in the Empress Club Stakes in April. Welwitschia is now theoretically 3.5kg better off (the equivalent of 3.50 lengths).

Several other runners have strong chances, notably the Gary Alexander-trained Ready To Run graduate, Pierre Jourdan, runner-up to Igugu in this year’s Vodacom Durban July, the Sean Tarry-trained Kahal colt, The Mouseketeer, winner of the Emerlad Cup in September, and the Kahal gelding outsider, Paul Gadsby-trained Black Wing.

Betting World has Welwitschia at 5/2, Pierre Jourdan at 7/2, Kavanagh at 4/1, Dancewiththedevil at 5/1 and The Mouseketeer at 14/1.

Sport LiveSo you want to buy a racehorse? Excellent decision, if I may say, madam.

To hell with world economic turmoil! Sod nationalisation, inflation, taxation and conflagration. Let’s have fun with a horse! Good thinking. Suits you, sir.

Step right this way sir, madam - to the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, for one day only, this Sunday in Germiston; the best source of winners rand-for-rand in the land.

Killjoys will whine that in wobbly economic times indulging in a hyper-luxury purchase like a thoroughbred is unwise. What do they know?

If they were really so smart, would they be dispensing dull advice as flea-bitten financial planners and moth-eaten columnists?

Look at it from another angle. Inflation erodes value in your savings, the ANC mafia hoovers the fiscus and gives you ever less value for taxes, the eurozone and Obamanomics might sneeze-cough-die and give us pneumonia, someone might bomb someone, pubs could be nationalised and Julius Malema may don a purple suit with matching shoes and trilby (oh, wait .).

To cheer yourself up amid all that woe you could have a beautiful horse, with glossy bum and pricked ears, who runs like billyo and brings you fortune, fame, love and laughter.

In whom would you rather put trust for the future? A multi-headed, swivel-eyed monster called Zuma-Papandreou-Sarkozy-Merkel-Netanyahu-Mugabe-Malema or a lovely, big-brown-eyed horse called Igugu?

Clearly some rich and clever people think the latter as thoroughbred horse sales around the world have ticked up markedly and exited the doldrums.

Thing is, no matter what madness the econo-politico bossy-boots dream up, there’s still a Durban July, a Derby, a world cup and thousands of other races to be won. And you can’t win ‘em without a horse, Tonto.

The Ready To Run is not a bad place to start looking for a runner. Purveyor of schooled, unraced three-year-olds, the sale has built an impressive honours roll in a short time.

Many of its bargain buys have won millions in prize money. Imbongi went for R140,000 and collected R8.9-million. Paris Perfect was R80,000 and took R5.2-million. Pierre Jourdan (R60,000; R4.1-million) and Hear The Drums (R42,000; R1.8-million) are others.

Igugu, 2011 July champ, was pricey at R1-million, but returned the favour with R5.5-million in less than a year.

The value proposition, though, is the Ready To Run Cup, a race exclusively for well-performed graduates of the previous year’s sale. Boosted by a modest point-of-sale sweepstake fee, the Cup is now worth R2-million.

With only 150 horses catalogued, each purchase has a mathematical one in eight chance of running for that whopping prize. By contrast, July or Met runners are in the top 1% of a few thousand horses in the country.

Sitting there fretting about the world will never give you the exciting ride that a racehorse will.

If you want to sample the thrill, tomorrow’s festive Charity Mile meeting at Turffontein is the place.

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, Germiston

6 November 2011

We’re not sure whether we’ve got this quote exactly as the sage of Omaha once said it, but Warren Buffett is famous for timing his investments to the tee. “Be fearful when the greedy are greedy, and be greedy when the greedy are fearful”. It seems that international thoroughbred investors had his advice in mind at the principal American and English sales last month, when a new tide of buyers from across the world ensured increases in average and median of 30 and 40% plus. That was before the recent EU deal on Greece, before US retail sales posted their increases, and before a spate of healthy reporting from Fortune 500 companies in the States.

In South African terms, it was before our president earned his brownie points with the announcement of an arms deal probe, the firing of 2 ministers, and the suspension of his Police Chief, and the conclusion of the evidence in the Malema disciplinary enquiry. The mood in the country has already moved into positive mode, and earlier this week Stats SA announced a net increase of almost 200,000 jobs in the formal sector. It’s remarkable how quickly things are developing, and here in the Golden City, we hear encouraging stories from retailers, casino and factory floor operators, that the “worm has turned”.

At the sales grounds, traffic is pumping, lending some credibility to a 17% uptick in visits to our website, and it seems Ready To Run fever is reaching a point where it will soon be notifiable. Credit applications at Bloodstock South Africa are well ahead of last year, and it seems the adage “the Ready To Run is all about fun” has taken deep root among racing fans. We’ve always known it, but it’s worth remembering the optimistic natures of racing people, who seem to bounce back before the rest of the economy. Toss in a bit of the farsightedness, the enterprise and the guts for which our countrymen are renowned, and the faith we’ve always held in South Africans, and you have all the ingredients for a good sale.

But this is a deep draft of quality thoroughbreds deserving of respect, and whilst you might accuse us of bias, no less a judge than Michael Azzie made a turn at Block A yesterday, and after inspecting the Summerhill draft, frustratedly announced he had 42 on his (long) shortlist, a phenomenon he’d never experienced at a sale before. He is among those that remember the early days at the Ready To Run, when he took home the top-priced colt of his year, Imperial Despatch (R65,000!), and turned him into the unbeaten champion juvenile of South Africa. He also recalls the fickle rapidity with which we tend to dismiss the progeny of certain sires, forgetting that fashion comes and fashion goes. Some years ago, when Desert Team was “dead and buried”, we consigned 4 of his youngsters, and all 4 of them told us on the gallops at home that they deserved some respect. Alan Greeff took home a Gold Cup Gr1 winner, Cereus, David Goss a Gr2 heroine, Dot Dot Dash, St John Gray a St Leger ace, Stud Master, and the late Roy Howe, Captive Audience, a 5-time winning filly who beat the colts under top weight in the B division.

The moral of the story : “watch the gallops”. These horses don’t know who their father is, and if the evidence is that they can run, it doesn’t matter who the hell their parents are. Good horses come from both patrician and plebeian backgrounds, with almost equal regularity, and there is no sale that exemplifies the successes of the rich and the not-so-rich quite as emphatically as this one. It’s also worth remembering that everything in our draft has had the benefits of a Summerhill upbringing, and if that can’t enhance your prospects, whatever your origins, nothing will. Simply put, it’s the best upbringing of a racehorse known to man.

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa

6 November 2011

Nico Kritsiotis
Nico Kritsiotis

Nico KritsiotisTalk to the retailers and the racing and casino operators, and they’ll all tell you there are signs of an imminent uptick in economic activity. In the world of racehorses, the outcomes at the recently concluded major sales in America and England were quite astonishing, with increases in the median and average between 30% and 40%. There is a point, it seems, beneath which horsemen with an appreciation for the inherent value of a thoroughbred, will not permit prices to descend.

This Sunday witnesses the 24th renewal of what is today appropriately named the “Field of Dreams”, the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale. Remarkably, for a sale which has averaged fewer than 150 entries, it has posted some landmark achievements particularly in the last decade. I was one of several thousand recent visitors to the pioneering farm, Summerhill’s website again this week, and apart from the many fascinating Ready To Run stories on the blog (blog.summerhill.co.za), I was amazed to scan their Ready To Run roll of honour, or put another way, the endless list of horses that had returned many times their purchase prices. Among them are 18 millionaires, six of them multi-millionaires, and just a handful cost R100,000 or more, proof, if it was needed, that there genuinely is “a horse for everyone at the Ready To Run Sale”.

Besides posting the top South African earners of both the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the Ready To Run has spawned the winners of four Gauteng Guineas in the past three years, Imbongi (2009) and Pierre Jourdan (2010) the Colt’s versions, and Fisani and Igugu the Fillies’.

Speaking to Summerhill’sMick Goss, he was his usual optimistic self about the interest in the sale. “We’ve been as active as ever in the visitors to the farm, and our website is cooking. Our fellow consignors have decent drafts too, and I’m sure they’ve been busy. It’s certainly the strongest catalogue we’ve seen to date, and I have great faith in the farsightedness and the enterprise of South Africans. They know how this sale has performed, and how difficult it is to get a runner in the other R2 million plus races in the land. You have to be in the top 1% of horses to get a line-up for the Vodacom Durban July, the J&B Met or the Sansui Summer Cup, but for our race, one in seven or eight gets to start, and next year’s event could rival the Met for prize money”.

In the end though, the stakeholders have always said “the Ready To Run is all about fun”. You only have to hear the buzz and see the faces of the connections in the parade ring before they line up for the R2 million prize and the best trophies in the game, to know they got this one right.

The sale takes place at Bloodstock South Africa’s TBA grounds at Gosforth Park from 1400 this Sunday 6th November.

SOLSKJAER AND WAY WEST : THE SILENT ASSASSINS

Solskjaer by Danehill

Solskjaer (left) and Way West (right)

 (Photos : Greig Muir)

“Two Stealthy Operators”

Some people go about their business with inordinate fanfare, and gather the legions in their wake. The Pied Piper comes to mind, so does Julius Malema. But at Summerhill, we have two stealthy operators, who are quietly carving a name for themselves with a gathering force of quality performers from their two small crops at the races.

Solskjaer’s a man who’s taken his time making his mark, but those with memories will know he debuted in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Gr1). While that was some statement of the esteem in which he was held by Coolmore and one of the world’s top trainers, Aidan O’Brien, it was nonetheless well into his three-year-old season that he first set foot on a racecourse.

It was unlikely then, that his progeny would be any different, and the emergence of Ice Axe as a proper contender for the R2million Sansui Summer Cup (Gr1) is a welcome endorsement for what we’d come to expect from a 120-rated son of one of the world’s top sires of his era.

This weekend, two daughters from his second lot, Final Score and I Got You Babe, put up their hands as likely contenders for higher honours in the impressions they made at Turffontein and Scottsville. Both are modestly priced (R50,000 and R7,000 respectively) graduates of the Summerhill Ready To Run programmes, and Final Score’s victory represented a final bold bid for a place in Saturday’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup. It seems the “Sollys” like the sound of “R2million”.

Danehill’s other Summerhill-based son Way West, reminded us of his capacity to surprise, when the unbeaten Hot Girl stampeded up to take her story to two from two. The Way Wests have an affinity for “two”, it appears. Two small crops, two Group One fillies to date, two runners in the Cup (both running for R2million) and Hot Girl two from two.

Two good to be two?
