According to statistics released by the Sporting Post, by the close of play last Saturday Summerhill Stud had a lead of R610,187 over last season's champions, Klawervlei Stud. This term runners from Summerhill have earned R20,3 million in stakes while Klawervlei's total is R19,7 million.
The odds are in favour of a Summerhill victory for the simple reason they are represented in two big races on Sunday - the eLan Gold Cup and Mike & Carol Bass Champions Cup. Klawervlei don't have runners in either race.
In the Champions Cup, Summerhill-bred, No Worries, could earn a place cheque although he's likely to find two three year-olds, Marinaresco and Baritone, too smart for him in the R1 million race.
Champion trainer, Sean Tarry, could help Klawervlei's cause if his runners do well in the supporting feature races such as the R300,000 Debutante Stakes and R300,000 Umkhomazi Stakes. Flying Myth will be one of the leading fancies in the latter event.
Tarry, who has enjoyed another outstanding season, will want to have a winner on the final day of the campaign and another Summerhill-bred, Intergalactic, should run well in the R400,000 Gold Bracelet.
