Emperors Palace Summer Ready To Run Sale
School of Equine Management Excellence, Summerhill Stud
24 February 2015
The past four weeks at the races have been punctuated by one overwhelming feature from a Summerhill perspective: eight winners, seven winners, six winners and nine this week, putting graduates of the farm at the top of the winners' leaderboard by a country mile. While it doesn't apply to every one of them, most were graduates of a Ready To Run programme which has been squarely at the root of our consecutive premiership successes of the past decade, highlighted by the sale off the farm, either privately or at the Summer Ready To Run itself, of a roll call of elites:
Champions, millionaires and racing celebrities Imbongi (cost R140k), Paris Perfect (R60k), Bold Ellinore (R60k), Emperor Napoleon (R100k), Amphitheatre (R30k), Black Wing (R50k) and No Worries (closing on R2million in earnings), Coby (R100k), Corredor (R60k), Flyfirstclass (R130k), Vulcan (R40k), Greasepaint (R80k), Tomorrow's Miss (R80k), and the Sophomore Sprint aces Sithela (R45k) and Rooi Nooi (R60k).
There's a temptation to think that whatever's left on the farm in the way of two-year-olds in February, must be exactly that: 'leftovers'. Yet the record tells us otherwise, that there's still a bunch of low-hanging fruit in the stable yards, and if you'd ask our grooms and jockeys, they'll tell you, 2015's no exception.
While there are any number of other reasons to make this event a 'must-attend' for anyone who believes a good eye is better than a big chequebook, as good as any, is it's an 'instant pudding'. The costs of keeping a racehorse these days are not insignificant, and the benefit of this sale (the last two-year-old sale of the year,) is that the consignors have borne the burden for as much as a year longer than those bought as yearlings in January 2014. This saving alone is close to R100,000, which makes the likelihood of a runner within a couple of months, an irresistible prospect.
One fascination we find in most racegoers, is the desire to back their own judgment. Ever since we initiated the practice of installing the videos of their performances on our website (View Here), we've seen tens of thousands of visitors 'clocking' the gallops: this year's draft went 'live' yesterday morning, and the heat is already on.
Editor's note: Nineteen of this catalogue's candidates carry engagements for the 2015 version of the R2.5million Emperor's Palace Ready To Run Cup, to be run at Turffontein in November as a lead feature with the Emperors Palace Charity Mile.
