Described in yesterday’s Thoroughbred Daily News as Royal Ascot’s treasured jewel, the Gold Cup was won in magnificent style for the second year running by one of history’s all-time greats, Yeats (by Sadler’s Wells), who was imperious in the manner in which he simply strode away from the cream of the European stayers.

Equally, we’re reminded here of the value of Sadler’s Wells and the singular vastness of his genetic impact on world racing. All the more reason to look forward to the arrival next month of his immaculately bred son, Grand Central.
